Matt was my best friend since kindergarten.  We hung out together whenever I was allowed out after school.  Sometimes we'd go to Lincoln School and I'd watch him shoot baskets.  Sometimes we'd just walk around town or sit by the pool and talk.  We could talk for hours.  When Matt went to Xavier, I'd get up and wave as the train passed so early it was still dark.  My sister kept saying he couldn't see me, but I said he knew I was there.  When he finally came to Hawthorne everything was back to normal.  I remember Mr. Nolan trying to separate us, putting Matt on one side of the room and me on the other.  As soon as he turned to the board, Matt would be back beside me.  When I acted like a bratty teenage girl, he would tease me until I came to my senses.  I can't remember one time when he was ever mad at me.  And I can't think of any time when he was alive without memories of him rushing in.  Next to my mom, I have never had a better friend.
